Lace & lashes
Lace conjures images of sexy and sultry with peek-a-boo cut-outs and eyelash trim of a babydolls to leather and lace fetish ensembles. Lace can be pure as a new bride's satin gown, covered elegantly with pearls and lace, complimented with lace gloves, to the debauchery of good girls gone wild with lace thongs, lace blindfolds, masks and burlesque stockings and corsets.
Other than the aesthetically pleasing look of lace, this versatile textile can be very soft, amazingly stretchy and forgiving, usually returning to its normal shape.
Ladies can feel sexy and confident wearing a body stocking with lace applique under their power suit, or sassy with booty shorts or a bandeau.
There are many types of lace. For example:
Needle Lace, such as Venetian Gros Point, is made using a needle and thread. this method is the most flexible of lace making arts. the finest antique needle laces were made from a very fine thread which is no longer manufactured. Originally linen, silk, gold or silver threads were used. Today most lace is made with cotton or a synthetic fiber.
Cutwork, or whitework, is lace constructed by removing threads from a woven background and the remaining threads are wrapped or filled with embroidery.
Bobbin lace, is made with bobbins and a pillow. Bobbins turned from, wood, bone or plastic, which are woven together and held in place with pins stuck in a pattern on the pillow. Also known as bone-lace. Chantilly lace is a form of bobbin lace.
Tape lace makes the tape in the lace as it is worked, or uses a machine- or hand-made textile strip formed into a design, then joined and embellished with needle or bobbin lace.
Knotted lace includes macramé and tatting. Tatted lace is made with a shuttle or a tatting needle.
Crocheted lace includes Irish crochet, pineapple crochet, and filet crochet.
Knitted lace includes Shetland lace, such as the "wedding ring shawl", a lace shawl so fine that it can be pulled through a wedding ring.
Machine-made lace is any style of lace created or replicated using mechanical means.
Chemical lace: the stitching area is stitched with embroidery threads that form a continuous motif. Afterwards, the stitching areas are removed and only the embroidery remains. The stitching ground is made of a water-soluble or non-heat-resistant material.
The next time you slip on lace, or brighten your eyes with eyelash lace, or watch a child or adult dance in a tutu, you might smile and appreciate the design and thought in how your garment was made. It has accomplished its' mission.
'This... stuff'? Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select... I don't know... that lumpy blue sweater, for instance because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise. It's not lapis. It's actually cerulean. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent... wasn't it who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff." from The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda Priestly.
